The film tells the story of Ikal and his friends, who are part of a group of students at SD Muhammadiyah Gantong, a poor and small school in Belitung. The school is run by Ms. Muslimah, Mr. Harfan, and Mr. Bakri, who are dedicated to teaching the students despite the lack of resources and facilities. The school needs 10 students to be able to operate legally, but only has nine until Harun arrives as the tenth student. The students form a strong bond and call themselves "Laskar Pelangi" (The Rainbow Troops) after seeing a rainbow forming one day. They learn various lessons of life from their teachers and each other, such as perseverance, humility, friendship, love, courage, and dreams.

The film also depicts the social and economic conditions of Belitung in the 1970s, which was rich in tin but plagued by bureaucracy and corruption. Most of the people were poor and some were unemployed; most men ended up working at the state-owned tin company PN Timah. Children of poor households were stereotyped as having no future who would end up working there as well. The film contrasts the situation of SD Muhammadiyah Gantong with that of SD PN Timah, a wealthy and prestigious school that was supported by the tin company. The film also shows the cultural diversity of Belitung, which had a mix of Malay, Chinese, Javanese, Bugis, Minangkabau, Batak, Sundanese, Balinese, Madurese, Banjar, Acehnese, Makassarese ethnic groups as well as Islam , Christianity , Buddhism , Hinduism , Confucianism religions.

The film is based on the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata , which was published in 2005 and became a bestseller in Indonesia. The novel was inspired by Hirata's own childhood experiences as a student at SD Muhammadiyah Gantong. The novel is the first part of a tetralogy that also includes Sang Pemimpi (The Dreamer), Edensor , and Maryamah Karpov . The novel has been translated into several languages such as English , French , German , Italian , Spanish , Dutch , Turkish , Korean , Japanese , Mandarin , Vietnamese , Arabic , Malay , Thai , Hindi , Urdu , Bengali , and Filipino . The novel has also been adapted into a musical , a comic book , and a television series .
